Variety-Savers

The European Network of Breed and Seed Savers

The attached are the minutes of the Heritaste discussion we had in Serbia last month. The discussion should continue. As it would seem that the space provided under the menu point "Heritaste Consultation" is too difficult to find, I have now moved the discussion here. If you wish to add your points anonymously then you can do this by sending an email to office (at) save-foundation.net.

We still need to discuss:

What can be certified?

•Whole farm?
•Products/services?
•Production?
•Restaurants?
•…….
Are there Regional differences to consider?

Can crossbreds be sold under label?

Use of GMOs not permitted: It is questionable, if this criteria is possible in reality. Sustainable production rules exclude GMO, but if you use commercial e.g. winter feeding, it is not sure, that it is GMO free. (is this a regional difference?)

Quality should be guaranteed (seasonal fluctuations are accepted for natural products):Statement: The consumer should decide, delete it from the list

Remaining criteria not yet discussed

Livestock:

•Livestock should be pure breeds and that should be documented
•Animals should be kept in accordance to documented traditional husbandry methods as long as this does not compromise animal welfare regulations (baseline is EU regulation or national law)

Plants:

•Plants must be a nationally accepted autochthonous variety
•Cultivation must be in polycultures

Services:

•Ecosystem services (e.g. grazing) should provide proven benefit to local ecosystems
•Other services (e.g. hippotherapy) should promote and support in-situ/on farm conservation

I have copied below the discussion so far and look forward to hearing more! Please remember - this will be YOUR label; if you do not add your points, it may not be useful for you!

Regards, Elli

Please add your comments, suggestions, ideas for changes etc here. We welcome any constructive criticism or advice at this stage of the process.

By the end of the process we hope to have terms of reference that a majority of stakeholders can agree to and, also, measurable and veritfiable conditions for use that can be used by a certification body to inspect the farms and producers wishing to use the label.

This comments thread will be moderated by SAVE staff for the duration of the consultation process (up to end of 2011) and then it will be closed. Any related topics of conversation that are not specifically about the improvement of the terms of reference and the conditions for use should take place in the forum space of this website.

The SZH just launced the "zeldzaam lekker" label for products from autochthonous breeds in The Netherlands. The presentation took place on the Living Heritage National Day august 28 (www.dagvanhetlevenderfgoed.nl) For more information: www.zeldzaamlekker.nl I think that a label on a national, more local, level will be more recognizable and effective because it is about products of national local breeds. May be Heritaste can act as an standard for for a national label. The biggest problem is to ensure the reliability. Besides this there is always the problem to keep the costs as low as possible.

thanks for your comment Geert. Anyone using the label Heritaste would have to be inspected on a national level in order to make it reliable. This means we would have to have contracts with national certification bodies. The cost is definitely a problem. We will have to cover our costs but we are aware that we cannot charge too much or people won't be interested in it. This is why it is listed as one of the risk factors. Although Heritaste is a European standard, the cost problem might mean that it is more difficult to introduce in some countries. We will have to try out one country at a time!

Michel Jacobi Comment by Michel Jacobi on Monday

Hallo,

I would like to continue our discussion from Serbia meeting about:

Feeding genetical modified organisms (GMO´s) and beeing "Heritaste" certified.

my Question: How importend will be to find out about the  origen of food for our Buffalos.

If I want to feed corn from lokal producers, I have to make compromises.

They may use dirty seeds...

Or how can I know here in Ukraine of the food is realy cleen...

Greetings Michel

Viehbestand:

Vorschlag:
Züchter sind registriert und zertifiziert
Herkunft ist dokumentiert (Erbfolge nachweisbar)
Gruß Elke
thanks for your contribution, Elke!

Dear Colleagues,

The consultation on Heritaste is coming to a close at the end of 2011. After discussion within the SAVE staff team, the attached summary has been compiled.

Our question for you: do you agree with the summary?

We are especially asking those of you who work on plant conservation to check the criteria carefully and give your opinion.

We are not yet at the end of the process and welcome all contributions to the discussion up the end of 2011.

You can send your agreement or disagreement to office (at) save-foundation.net or post it here.
